Ronnie Ross: Live at the Cannonball

88/3

Personnel: Ronnie Ross (baritone saxophone), Unknown (guitar),
Chris Bolton (bass), Tony Levin (drums).
Leader: Ronnie Ross
Date: December 17 1988
Venue: The Cannonball Club, Adderley Street, Birmingham

3. I Hear a Rhapsody (Jack Baker/George Fragos/Dick Gasparre) (9:04)
4. Dear Old Stockholm (Ack, Värmeland du Sköna) (Swedish traditional) (incomplete)

My thanks to bluebird and DaveB for their help with this session. I have had the music for some time but always rejected it as of not too good quality in terms of reproduction. However, a new version from bluebird could be a little better so I decided to go with it. The music is too good to miss, with Ronnie on top form. DaveB masterminded the images. Please leave thanks for both of them in comments.

Ronnie announces the last tune as "Song of the Fir Tree" but it does seem to be as above and the translation into Swedish does not include any trees as far as we can tell. If there are any Swedish visitors here, or other knowledgeable linguists, perhaps they might throw some light on this.

This is one for jazzuk but anyone else is welcome to download as well! It comes with much thanks to bluebird who kindly sent the LP rip.

An interesting performance, the music grows on one I have found. Ronnie Ross does solo but in such a large ensemble not so much heard from him of course. The leader seems to have had a penchant for trombone solos here but perhaps that is not surprising.

Update

There may yet be one more post here and one never knows what new material could become available, unlikely though that seems. I left a comment about the two items that were removed; this was due a problem which cropped up about permission to offer for download and this caused me to ponder the future of the blog. I have received much kind encouragement to continue however, and have decided to do so on the following basis.

As long as downloads continue, the links will be preserved but if they do expire, I will not automatically renew them. If anyone wants to download something and finds the links are gone, leave a comment on the item and I will upload again.

Thanks to all for your help and support.

Final Update

I'm sorry to say the prospect of a further post of the music of Ronnie Ross has receded, only a small chance left that it will materialize and this in the distant future.

So that seems to be it. I will keep the downloads current for as long as I can. Thanks to all once again for your interest and contributions.

Au revoir.

Ronnie Ross is heard only on track 1 but plays a good solo.
Ripped from a 10" LP so quite short at just over 26 minutes.

I have been prevailed upon to include this cover with a picture of Ronnie's girlfriend, the model Ann Walker. The sessions were to be called "Focus on Ronnie Ross" but we thought "After Hours" would fit better - hence a last minute change.

I am indebted to gonzo, through whose alertness and diligence, we are just today almost certain that the second session had at least seven tunes. Only the four can be included here though as the remaining three are not available in reasonably good quality sound.

Please note that a password is now needed (see comments) - this has been included on gonzo's advice, which has also helped me with the restoration of this recording. The restoration was quite difficult in this instance, particularly because of a drop-out in track 8 which had to be filled. There are a few clicks left but not many I hope.
